About the author

David Green, barrister

I am a barrister at 12 King's Bench Walk, where I practise jointly in personal injury and employment. You can read more about my practice here.

Before I was a barrister I was a management consultant. Every project ran on Excel, and there was a huge emphasis on efficiency. I was encouraged to make and employ reusable tools whenever there was repetitive work, and not to reinvent what had already been made by other people. So when I came to the Bar, and found barristers and solicitors methodically repeating complicated calculations day after day with paper and pencil, I was staggered.

I'd always enjoyed tinkering with spreadsheets, so I gradually started to make little calculators for common tasks — working out interest, or costs, or interpolating multipliers. After a little while I put them all together, and formatted them nicely. Then I started sharing them. Soon enough I was regularly distributing an Excel workbook collection of calculators through Chambers.

I have eventually come around to putting the collection online and opening them up for all legal professionals to use.

The calculators are there to save you time, eliminate errors, and focus on what matters, which is analysis and judgment — not routine computation.

Other sites and services offer to build Schedules of Loss for their users. I was never attracted by that idea — I wanted to have control over my documents. But I wanted my calculations to be quick, consistent and correct. The calculators don't replace the lawyer: they support you.
